Prestige

Introducing Sklárna Květná's new collection, Prestige.

Prestige is the latest in a line of designs successfully launched in 2005 and which has already been recognized by a number of awards, including Design Plus. While Květná's previous glass collections have been designed exclusively by Czech artists, the Prestige collection is a partnership with premier foreign designers, a first among Czech glass companies.

The first three designers invited to participate – Arik Levy, Jean-Marie Massaud and Marco Sousa Santos – belong among the current European design elite. They accepted without hesitation our invitation to design a special drink service from hand-blown glass. We were further delighted when all three expressed their admiration for the Czech glass tradition as well as for the new ways of the Květná glass works. For the Prestige collection each of them created an original set consisting of red and white wine glasses, champagne flutes, water glasses, carafes, and other table accessories.

Glasses will be firstly intoduce at Designblok 2007, which takes place in Prague from 2nd – 7th October 2007.

ARIK LEVY
Mitos
designed for Sklárny Květná, 2007, from hand blown glass

Israeli artist Arik Levy lives and works in Paris where, together with designer P. Lionnim, he founded the Ldesign studio. Among the furniture and interior accessories in his portfolio (for Zanotta, Serralunga, Vitra, Ligne Roset, Desalto, and others) you will also find noteworthy glass items (for Gaia & Gino and Baccarat), as well as objets d'art, to which he dedicates the same intensity.

"Several of my glass designs have been produced in the Czech Republic, but only for foreign brands." The Květná glassworks fulfilled his dream of creating something directly for a local firm. Inspired by the exceptionally fascinating mythology of the glassmaking craft, he has created for Květná the highly shapely and at the same time light and airy drink service Mitos.

JEAN-MARIE MASSAUD
Graal
designed for Sklárny Květná, 2007, hand blown glass and platinum

French designer Jean-Marie Massaud, who has designed for several prestigious firms (for example Cassina, Poltrona Frau, Porro, Axor and Cappellini), has contributed in a fundamental way to the development of contemporary worldwide design in the last decade. With his Studio Massaud (together with D. Pouzetem) he is dedicated to not only design but also architectural projects (he is just finishing with the Volcano stadium in Mexico).

He has long wished to design glasses, an impulse given to him by an ancient cup he bought in Italy. For Květná he has created the magnificent, modern, and archetypal set Graal, produced from thick glass with a magnifying effect, adorned with platinum. Imagine a "perfect contrast between rustic and sophisticated". Each of his cups embodies "a crystal grail in evening dress."

MARCO SOUSA SANTOS
Float I a Float II
designed for Sklárny Květná, 2007, hand blown glass

The most remarkable contemporary Portuguese designer, Marco Sousa Santos, who was present at the founding of the biennial Experimenta Design and the Proto Design studio, both in Lisbon, has played an important role in the development of design in his country in the last decade. In addition to furniture and exhibition installations, the designer is devoted to interior accessories from glass and porcelain of a very sensual shape (for example for the companies Atlantis and Sátira).

"I gladly accepted the invitation, because it occurred to me that there is an interesting parallel between Czech and Portuguese glass making traditions, about which few Czechs know, and which is for the first time entering a concrete creative dialogue.“ For Květná the designer has created the elegant Float services, which he describes as "bodies floating in the sea, reflected in its calm surface."
